Resumen

Silvestre Guevara y Lira (1813-1882), archbishop of Caracas between 1853 and 1876, was a key player in the development of church-state relations during those years. He was the main architect of the Venezuelan state concordat with the Holy See in 1864, which ultimately could not be approved because the Venezuelan government refused to sign it. But above ali, Guevara was the staunch defender of the unity of the Venezue/ans and the cause of the Catholic Church, which earned him exile in the first government of Guzman Blanco, and six years after the resignation of Archbishop of Caracas. Stumbling blockfor guzmancismo, was always intransigent against attacks by Guzmán, but the people could appreciate his courage, which was manifested in his crowded funeral on February 20, 1882.
