The present essay pretends to be an introduction to the problem of the relations between philosophy and Christian doctrine and the historical consequences of such apparently paradoxical communion. Also, the article shows the position of one of the most influent philosopher in the early medieval age. I mean Saint Augustine, whose writings are nowadays as interesting as they were in the past. He adapted and inserted successfully into a Christian context the neoplatonic conceptions of reality. But, philosophy for him was intrinsically joined with theology. The end of philosophy is not knowledge but wisdom, the same end of theology. Philosophy and theology are two paths leading to the same end: happiness and wisdom, knowledge about the eternal things. So "believe to understand and understand to believe ", Augustine said, must be the course to truthfully knowledge. And, faith is only possible to rational beings.
