The current essay refers to some historicalfigures and actions developed by the Order of Preachers (known as the Dominicans) in the process of emancipation of Venezuela. The Dominicans arrived in Venezuela in the sixteenth Century and founded monasteries and missions in different parts of the Country. The author studied several documents in various archives evidencing the policy preferences of the monks and their consequences in the social field and community. There was never a firm and official position on a general level taken by all Dominicans, but we find important individuals and some actions that represent a valuable witness to the political thought of the Catholic Church during the process of Independence from the Crown of Spain.
