We try to demonstrate that in Spanish, although a language of Latin origin, there are severa! words or expressions which refer to the mythological or cultural words of Greece: this is meant to be the "horizon", or further point beyond which no conscious cultural reference in the common every-day Spanish is found. To establish this, we do not follow the traditional philological method, which inevitably leads to Latin, but emphasize several words or metaphoric expressions which carne throw Latin, but whose real origin is Greek and refer to Greece. Simultaneously, we ascertain that when several words or expressions of Greek origin are present in languages of different philological origins, this allows us to associate the people which speak them into the same cultural area.
