Toe new political system that the President ofthe Republic intends to enforce has been denominated since 2005 as the Socialism of the 21st Century, although it <loes not appear as a mandate nor political orientation in the National Constitution of 1999. Different instances from the Venezuelan ecclesiastical Institution have called upon the necessity to clarify the ideological direction, especially dealing with the notion of man and society as it is being understood by the official political speech. Toe present essay was presented as a lecture given at Boston College during April 2007, presenting a systematic approach to the different elements that define the political horizon of the so called Socialism of the 21 st Century in order to analyze its ideological implications.
