-- Historical events, political and social changes in a traditionally Catholic nation, have their implications far the Church, which was an institution to be taken in consideration.
In the nineteenth century, Venezuela experienced a breaking process: independence from Spain, the constant revolutions, the passage from Catholic denominational to proclaim religionfreedom. A century marked by liberalism and positivism of the ruling classes, by the Gallicanism and regalism of governments in religious matters and, specifically, by the appropriation and application of Republican Patronage.
The institution of Patronage, understood as an inherent right of sovereignty of the State to protect and control the Church, will be the theme of this history subject. The Church is regarded and treated as a concurrent power, as such, cannot be tolerated. The Patronage was the pattern in which the liberal state placed the Church was thefield ofmutual relations andfrequent conflicts.
