-- In the context ofbicentenary celebrations when Venezuela's General Captaincy of Vicente Emparan was compelled to withdraw his position by command of the people from Caracas, the following paper primarily intends to describe how the Venezuelan Catholic church observed April 19th of 18/0's centenary festivities. A hundred years ago, General Juan Vicente Gómez began to rule the country under a dictatorial government that would show an ambivalent attitude towards the Church having mixedfeelings about it. Therefore taking into consideration the data included on Pontifical Delegate Mons. José Aversa 's statement and "La Religión" newspaper's remarks, this speech about the XXth Century given during ITER's History conferences describes thefestivities and other points of view stated by the clergy, and the relations between patriotism and Catholicism.
